National Instruments

This page of national instruments from around the world is one of the best Wikipedia lists I’ve come across in some time. Most of these instruments are from more traditional cultures and times, making many rare even in their own countries today.

Add a little youtube research for hours of fun. Learn the secrets of fast berimbau playing, listen to Bach played on a nyckelharpa, or see “Umbrella” performed on a giant angklung. Finally, it doesn’t get any more Peruvian than playing El Condor Pasa on a charango and zampoƱa at the same time.

Los Beatles

I came across this recently, but I have no idea where it’s from. Even TinEye was no help.

Links (to look at)

  • David Kennerly is an American photographer who, over his long career, has assembled an incredible portfolio. He was President Ford’s official photographer, so there are many political shots, including this image of a youngish Dick Cheney that has been circulating recently.
  • Looking Into the Past is a collection of images showing the same location in an old photograph and a modern-day one. Sometimes the old photo is held up and aligned by hand, and sometimes they are photoshopped together. Either way, the effect is cool.
  • On January 26, India celebrates Republic Day. The Frame collected images of this year’s amazingly colorful parade (complete with the less-than-colorful weapons).
  • Who doesn’t want to see some celebrity yearbook photos?

Magic Highway USA

An excerpt from the 1958 Disneyland TV Show episode entitled Magic Highway USA. In this last part of the show, an exploration into possible future Transportation technologies is made.

I love the animation style and “Radiant City” starry-eyed futurism.
