  • A short and entertaining science fiction story by Terry Bisson called “They’re Made Out of Meat
  • Jumping from science fiction to science fact (well, theory), here is a brief rundown of the case for time-travel. Key quote: “Scientists have no doubt whatever that it is possible to build a time machine to visit the future.” It’s the past that’s a problem.
  • Doing some research for work, I came across this article on living on a cruise ship. You may need dramamine just to check out the prices, but it sure sounds interesting.

Some surprising facts about youtube:

As of Q1 2008, YouTube is not profitable, with its revenues being noted as “immaterial” by Google in a regulatory filing. Its bandwidth costs are estimated at approximately $1 million a day. It is estimated that in 2007, YouTube consumed as much bandwidth as the entire Internet in 2000, and that around ten hours of video are uploaded every minute.

Beatles Money

The Beatles made a lot of money (reportedly about £17,500,000 in eight and a half years, without songwriting credits), and they also spent a lot of money. The website Beatle Money documents some of the things that the group spent money on, both together and as individuals.

A few from the long list:

  • John once placed an order with a store for every game they had in stock. He also purchased 20 complete sets of scale electric trains complete with hills, bridges, etc. After several weeks he became disinterested with the trains.
  • John purchased an island (Dornish Island) for £1,550 on March 17,1967 and planned to build a holiday home there. The home was never built and a group of hippies, led by Sid Rawle, were given permission to live on the island. The harsh winters, however, prevented the new residents from staying on the island.
  • Ringo: “When the money first began to pour in, I’d go and buy ten suits, a dozen shirts, and three cars. I spent money like it had just been invented.”
  • Apple Corps.

She sounds like this?

I can’t help knowing who Miley Cyrus is even though I’ve never seen or heard anything she’s done. I’m a little out of the target audience, but I heard the song See You Again last night and thought there must be some mistake. THIS is what the 10 year old girls are listening too?! I’m still baffled, and it’s still the only song I’ve heard, but it’s far from what I expected. First, let’s get on with it:

Doesn’t the music seem to clash with that homemade colorful Disney background? Try it without looking at the video. It’s that beat! It’s lifted from the 80s song Sunglasses at Night (see below), and that goes a long way to explaining the mood of the song, but honestly, the beat is even harder in the Miley Cyrus song. The verses are sparse and moody, but the chorus slips into a more Disney-friendly mold that sounds almost like Japanese pop. Still, there are hooks. The closest thing I can think of is the Britney Spears song Toxic. See You Again seems like it’s made for the dancefloor, and with a little poking around I found some remixes of it. Weird.
